Wow Atlanta, it wasn’t even that much snow, but you still managed to mess that up. Maybe you should have paid attention to how we in New England prepare for even the lightest of storms, ya know that’s pretty sad when your main roads and highways are skating rinks.

[It’s also really sad when your Mayor says it “isn’t his fault” instead of taking responsibility.]

I spent 5 hours helping cars outside my neighborhood. The shitty drivers are the ones to blame. People panic and floor it which only results in more ice.

I'll never understand how you peoples in the south can freak out, drive in to ditches and cause traffic to come to a stop when it snows an inch or two.

FUCK! You guys needs to spend a winter up north and take a driving lesson in how to drive in snow (regardless of tire compound)! I know people in Minnesota still drive RWD cars with summer tires on in the snow and don't crash.

I don't live there, and I certainly don't enjoy visiting. However, "winter" is not the same in the south as in uppity New England, or even a large swath of the midwest.

Your city has likely been caught off-guard and/or paralyzed by a winter storm in the past. Your fellow uppity neighbors have probably spent hours stuck in traffic just like ATL is right now. Each city is prepared for likely events, and probably "unlikely" events to an extend. This is outside the norm for the south, so cut them some slack.

As a midwestern transplant in the south I will say that southerners are way more likely to stay home if they don't think they can handle the weather. That's an asset I think, and not something shared by our friends to the north and northwest.

Wow. The mayor may be a douche but just remember that when you're facing another March snowstorm that we'll be driving our sports cars with the tops down. Because we measure winters in days, not months.

And one other thing you uppity Yankees need to remember - we don't care how you did it up north. We don't. We're not going to budget the kind of money to deal with snows like this that we see once every ten years, not every 20 minutes like you poor benighted brain frozen schlubs. You chowds put more miles on one salt/plow truck in a week than we'd put on ten trucks in 5 years.

Exactly. A real Southerner knows what to do in frozencrap weather - stay home.

The schools around Atlanta and Birmingham were foolish to open at all yesterday; here in my part of NC they didn't open period. But any Yankee who is suggesting that we spend their kind of money on trucks plows etc...is also foolish.

March??? It was 79F a few weeks ago here in the Triangle. "March" is when you roll the top down in neutral states.

To be fair there are people with emergencies or may need medical attention who may not be able to receive it because the road conditions are so bad, that's more of a reason to have at least a contingency plan to plow and salt major roadways in case. And like you said since it doesn't happen for years at a time setting aside a small amount of the city budget towards it over time will build up until when it's actually needed.

Unless you think old granny should just keel over and die (her time was gonna come anyway) or that kid having an asthma attack deserved it, if so you'll fit right in with us Northerners!

Read this on Gizmodo ...it has a good chronology that explains why this one was so different. You can't plan for everything...not in a world of limited resources.
